Ingredients
  

Main Ingredients

  • 2 bread rolls preferably German Brötchen
  • 2-3 fillets Matjes (pickled herring) mild and buttery
  • 1 small onion thinly sliced
  • 2-3 slices pickles thinly sliced
  • 2-4 lettuce leaves fresh
  • fresh dill optional, for garnish
  • 1-2 tsp horseradish cream or mustard for extra flavor

Instructions
 

  • Slice the bread rolls in half horizontally, but keep them connected at one side for a better hold.
  • Spread a thin layer of horseradish cream or mustard on the bottom half of each roll.
  • Place a fresh lettuce leaf on each roll.
  • Lay 1-2 Matjes fillets over the lettuce on each roll.
  • Add thinly sliced onions and pickles for crunch and tanginess.
  • Sprinkle fresh dill on top (optional).
  • Close the roll gently and secure with a toothpick if necessary.

Notes

For a less salty taste, rinse the Matjes fillets lightly under cold water before assembling the sandwich.
